MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Cincinnati senior quarterback Zach Collaros (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) will start for the Bearcats in the 2011 AutoZone Liberty Bowl against Vanderbilt, Head Coach Butch Jones announced Thursday.
UC will face off against Vanderbilt at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Liberty Bowl Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC and air on 700 WLW AM radio.
For Collaros, a Second-Team All-BIG EAST performer, the start marks a remarkable comeback from an ankle injury suffered on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 against West Virginia. Collaros had surgery to repair a broken ankle on Monday, Nov. 14.
The Bearcats had a busy Thursday in Memphis, attending the coaches luncheon, holding practice, then having a team dinner and a shopping trip to Best Buy ahead of an evening trip to the movies.
The coaches luncheon was a chance for fans to learn a little bit more about both teams playing in the game Saturday. Jones, UC President Dr. Gregory H. Williams, Director of Athletics Whit Babcock and senior linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) all spoke about UC's season, its experience in Memphis and the game this coming weekend. UC's 2011 All-BIG EAST Conference honorees were recognized alongside Schaffer, chosen as the team's academic scholar.
Practice was an hour long affair that saw the team install the final elements of the game plan as well as working through various in-game and special-team situations.
Following the brief workout, the Bearcats headed downtown to Texas de Brazil for a team dinner ahead of a shopping trip to Best Buy to receive park of the team's AutoZone Liberty Bowl gift package.
