University of Cincinnati senior Jared O’Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) posted a two-round 5-under par 71-68=139 Monday to climb into a four-way tie for eighth place after the first day at the Lone Star Invitational at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.

O’Kelley registered four birdies and 11 par scores in the morning’s opening round but it was his performance in the second round that placed him among the top 10 players in the individual standings. O’Kelley climbed 11 places in the rankings in the afternoon thanks to his 4-under 68 in round two, recording six birdies and 11 par scores.

“Jared probably played his best 36 holes of golf all year today,” UC head coach Doug Martin said. “His ball striking and putting were exceptional.”

O’Kelley sits seven strokes behind the tournament leader, Oklahoma’s Max McGreevy (12-under 69-63=132).

UC sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) ranks tied for 21st place at 2-under 73-69=142. After a double bogey on his opening hole of the event, Squires recovered, posting six birdies and 27 par scores over his next 35 holes.

As a unit, the Bearcats are tied for ninth in the 15-team field at 2-under 288-286=574. Seventh-ranked Illinois leads the team standings at 27-under 272-277=549.

“We’ve got a chance to move up to sixth or seventh on Tuesday if we post a good score. That wouldn’t be bad in this challenging field of teams,” Martin said. “The biggest thing separating us from the top teams in the standings is our play on the par 5s. We’ve got to make more birdies and convert on those holes. We’re playing better just not as well as we need to do.”

Final-round action starts at 9:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
