OXFORD, Ohio---Junior Geoff Newman shot an opening round 76 to end the first day of the UC/UD Men's Invitational in sole possession of second place. Newman's performance has helped the Bearcats to third place in the team standings, just five shots off the lead. Cincinnati is co-hosting the event along with the University of Dayton.

Playing in cold, rainy and blustery conditions, Newman stands just two shots back of Detroit's Mark Sommerfeld in the battle for the number one spot. Freshman Albert Fernandez and sophomore Luke Underhill are also in the top-10 after rounds of 78 and 79, respectively. Fernandez holds a share of sixth, while Underhill is tied for 10th.

In the team standings, the Bearcats shot a 320 on Monday to stand five shots behind first place Detroit and just two back of current runner-up Otterbein. UC also fielded a "B" squad in the tournament, which is in seventh place at 327.

Play concludes from the Hueston Woods Golf Course on Tuesday, with the first men's tee times set for 10:32 a.m.
