Bearcats End Home Tournament With Third Place Finish|
April 3, 2007
OXFORD, Ohio---With four players in the top-10, including individual Alex Wenzel in a tie for fourth, the University of Cincinnati men's golf team earned a third place finish at its own invitational which concluded on Tuesday. The two-day event was played at the Hueston Woods Golf Course just outside of Oxford.
Wenzel turned in one of the tournament's most surprising performances, as playing as an individual, he carded rounds of 73 and 72 to finish just eight shots off the winning pace set by Texas' Farren Keenan. Keenan posted impressive scores of 69 and 68 to win by four shots over Detroit's Mark Sommerfeld.
Joining Wenzel in the top-10 were sophomores Paul Marshall and Albert Fernandez, along with senior Joe Young. Marshall shot a 73 on Tuesday to finish at 146, one shot better than his teammates. Fernandez's final round score of 71 was just one shot off of his career-best. Ryan Heinly also turned in a notable performance, carding a career-low 72. His prior best before this week's tournament was an 89.
Northern Kentucky won a tight battle for the team championship, finishing at 589, one shot better than Texas and just two in front of the Bearcats.
The Bearcats have just one more event to prepare for the BIG EAST Championship as they will compete in IUPUI's Wolf Run Intercollegiate April 15-16.
