DADE CITY, Fla. - The University of Cincinnati women's and men's golf teams are 3rd and 10th, respectively, after 18 holes of competition at the 2009 BIG EAST Golf Championships, which are being held at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
Anna Cumtell (Halmstad, Sweden) leads the women's team with an even-par 72 first round, sitting in fifth place. Bambee Dela Paz (Caloocan City, Philippines/Miriam College) fired a three-over 75, good for a share of 14th place.
The Bearcats posted a first-round total of 301, six shots back of second-place Notre Dame (295) and five shots better than St. John's (306). Louisville shot a nine-under 27 to take a 16 shot lead through 18 holes. UL's Laura Anderson leads the individual race with a first-round 67.
The men's team posted a first-round 304 to sit in 10th place through 18 holes. Alberto Fernandez (Gijorn, Spain/La Corolla) is tied for fifth after a one-under 71. Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) fired a 76, while Ryan Cahill (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) is one shot back of Kastelic following his opening-round 77.
Louisville (282) leads the men's team competition by three strokes over Seton Hall (285). UC is two shots behind ninth-place Georgetown (302) and eight shots better than Villanova (312).
Round two begins Monday morning at 8:00 a.m.
