Tepe Strengthens Lead at BIG EAST Championship|
April 29, 2013
CINCINNATI – Senior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) of the University of Cincinnati men’s golf team scored a 3-under par 69 for the second consecutive round to take a two-stroke lead after two days of competition at the BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla. After two rounds, Tepe has a total score of 69-69=138 to lead the field of 60 competitors. The Bearcats finished the day with a score of 298-299=597 to tie for eighth.
Tepe’s two scores of 69 are his lowest of the spring season and his best single-round score since carding a 68 in the final round of the Marshall Invitational on Sep., 11, 2012. He is on track to earn the best finish of his career after finishing second at a tournament during his junior season. The senior also recorded six birdies on the day, besting his round-one total of five.
“Today was another solid round for David Tepe” said head coach Doug Martin. “He is very much in control of his emotions and his game. His experience certainly has been a key factor during the last two rounds. He is a great manager of the game.”
Freshman Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek) and sophomore Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) also produced solid second round scores for the Bearcats. Newsome hit an even par to bring his total to 75-72=147 and put him in a tie for 16th place. Howard hit 2-over for a two-day score of 76-74=150 to tie for 29th position.
Sophomore Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) and freshman Adam Millson (Union, Ky./Cooper) each hit a 12-over 84 during the second round. Wolf is tied for 55th with a 78-84=162 and Millson is tied for 58th with a 81-84=165.
“From a team standpoint, today was a very frustrating round” said Martin. “We were in a position for a good round and couldn’t come up with a fourth score. We had three very solid rounds from Tepe, Newsome and Howard. Tomorrow is a new day and we will need an entire team effort.”
Tepe’s lead grew from one stroke after round one to two strokes following the completion of round two. He leads USF’s Chase Koepka who is in second with a 70-70=140. Ryan Gay of St. John’s (70-71=141), Curtis Loop of Georgetown (77-66=143) and Trey Valentine of USF (72-71=143) round out the top-5 individuals.
USF leads the team competition with a score of 290-287=577 after two rounds. Louisville (297-282=579) and St. John’s (298-283=581) also place in the top-3 while two-time defending champion Notre Dame sits in fourth (288-296=584).
The Bearcats will begin action in the final round of the BIG EAST Championship on Tues., April 29. All players will tee off from hole No. 10 between 8:50 and 9:30 a.m.
