The University of Cincinnati men’s golf team carded a 20-under par 281-275=556 score Monday to surge into first place after the opening day at the Cleveland State Invitational at the Barrington Country Club in Aurora, Ohio.

The Bearcats held a one stroke lead over Detroit after the first round at 7-under 281 then carded a Doug Martin-coaching-era record 13-under par 275 in the afternoon round. UC enters final-round action Tuesday nine strokes ahead of second-place Detroit (11-under 282-282=565) in the 13-team field.

“We got off to a fast start in the morning and kept making birdies,” Martin said. "We played very well today. It wasn’t mistake free, but overall I’m very proud of the guys.”

Junior Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) is tied with two players for first place at 7-under 137, three strokes off the lead. Howard posted a 3-under 69 in the morning round before carding a career-best 4-under 68 in the afternoon.  He is tied with Loyola-Chicago’s Nick Dennis (71-66=137) and Detroit’s Aaron Knutson (70-67=137) for the top spot on the leader board.

“When you look at Jared Howard’s performance, this is what he’s been doing since he came back to school,” Martin said. “He has raised his game to another level.”

Two other Bearcats are listed among the top eight players in the individual standings. Junior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) registered a 4-under 69-71=140 and is tied with Cleveland State’s Andrew Bailey (70-70=140) and Youngstown State’s Brandon Pluchinsky (67-73=140) for fifth place.

Freshman Jared O’Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School), making a strong showing in his collegiate debut, vaulted from 29th place in the morning round to a three-way tie for eighth at 3-under 74-67=141. He is tied with a pair of Oakland players, Evan Bowser (70-71=141) and Alex Turner (70-71=141).

Sophomore Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) is in a four-way tie for 12th place at 1-under 74-69=143. Junior John Michael O’Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) is tied for 34th place at 69-81=150. Junior Michael Wolf is playing the tournament as an individual and is tied for 67th place at 86-73=159.

“This team is very hungry and working very hard,” Martin said. “Baxter had 14 birdies in 36 holes. Emerson is coming back into his own and O’Kelley – in his first tournament of his career – posts a bogey-free 67 in the afternoon.”

Host Cleveland State moved up three places in the team standings from the morning round to third place at 1-under at 290-285=575. Loyola-Chicago is fourth at 2-over 288-290-578. Rounding out the 13-team field is Evansville (fifth at 288-295=583), Oakland (sixth at 289-295=584), Appalachian State (seventh at 297-289=586), Dayton (eighth at 295-295=590), Youngstown State (ninth at 299-296=595), Wright State (10th at 291-309=600), Robert Morris (11th at 298-306=604), Butler (12th at 320-300-620) and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (13th at 307-325=632).
