LOVELAND, Ohio---Junior Albert Fernandez and redshirt freshman Ryan Cahill both shot day one scores of 142, leading the University of Cincinnati men's golf team in the opening day of play at the Xavier Invitational. The 20-team tournament is being played at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland.
Ferandez and Cahill both started tournament play with career-best scores of 70, before carding identical scores of 72 in the day's finale. The tandem's play has Cincinnati in 16th place in the team standings with a total of 584. UC sits only one shot behind 15th place Bowling Green and trails the Top-10 by just six shots.
Marquette is leading the highly competitive tournament by two shots over Saint Mary's (Calif.) with a score of 561. SMC's Joshua Kelley and Eastern Kentucky's Phillip Hendrickson are tied atop the individual leaderboard with scores of 134.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
