The University of Cincinnati men’s golf team claimed the Cleveland State Invitational title Tuesday, posting a 9-under par 279 to finish at 29-under 281-275-279=835 at the Barrington Country Club (par 72, 7,049 yards) in Aurora, Ohio. It marks the program’s first tournament victory since 2008.
The Bearcats finished 28 strokes ahead of host Cleveland State (290-285-288=863) in the 13-team field.
UC’s last tournament title came at the UC Spring Invitational on April 1, 2008. The Bearcats have finished in the Top 5 of the team standings in each of their three fall tournaments this season and next play host to the Bearcat Invitational, Oct. 7-8, at Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Ky.
“I’m really proud of our golf team,” UC head coach Doug Martin said. “Looking at where we’ve been and where we are now is great. Seeing the high fives and the players embracing each other after our round today is what team golf is all about. I’m excited for this group.”
Junior Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) registered his best career finish at the collegiate level, taking second place at 9-under 69-68-70=207. He fell one stroke shy of Loyola-Chicago’s Nick Dennis, who won medalist honors at 10-under 71-66-69=206.
“Jared has improved so much and is such a great leader for our team,” Martin said. “His contributions are invaluable."
All five Bearcats ranked in the Top 25 of the individual standings. Junior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) and sophomore Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) joined Howard among the Top 10 finishers. Reeves posted the best final-round score by a Bearcat on Tuesday with a 3-under 69 to take fourth place following a career-best 7-under 69-71-69=209. Newsome was 2-under 70 on Tuesday to tie for seventh place with a season-best 3-under 74-69-70=213.
“Baxter is a very explosive player for us,” Martin added. “He has a chance to win every single tournament as well.”
In his first collegiate tournament, UC freshman Jared O’Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) recorded a 1-under 74-67-74=215 to finish in 14th place. Junior John Michael O’Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) tied for 25th place at 4-over 69-81-70=220. Junior Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) played the tournament as an individual and tied for 76th place at 86-73-87=246.
“Everyone is chipping in,” Martin said. “It’s a great group of kids who refuse to quit. I’ve never had a team like this. They fight to the end.”
Rounding out the 13-team field, Evansville (288-295-286=869), Loyola-Chicago (288-290-291=869) and Detroit (282-283-304=869) tied for third place. Appalachian State was sixth at 297-289-287=873.
