HEBRON, Ky. – University of Cincinnati freshman Emerson Newsome recorded the best finish of his young collegiate career, taking 17th place with a 4-over par 72-70-78=220 at the Bearcat Invitational at Traditions Golf Club.
Newsome pulled to within two shots of the lead after posting a 2-under par 70 in the second round that was completed earlier in the morning. However, he finished the final round with an 6-over 78 to end up in 17th place.
Northern Kentucky’s Cory Richmond won medalist honors after edging Austin Peay’s Anthony Bradley on the first hole of the playoff. Richmond carded a birdie on the par-four No. 10 to secure the win. Richmond (67-73-73=213) and Bradley (70-71-72=213) were even after 54 holes.
Austin Peay claimed the team title for the second consecutive year with a 3-over par 292-289-286=867. Belmont was second six shots back at 9-over 287-290-296. Cincinnati’s Red team finished ninth at 39-over 296-297-310=903. UC’s black team was 13th at 315-306-319=940.
UC’ second-best finisher was freshman Blake Hamilton who tied for 28th place at 9-over par 76-73-76=225. Other UC scores from the Red team included senior David Tepe tying for 34th place at 12-over par 74-78-76=228; sophomore Jared Howard tying for 61st place at 74-83-80=237; and sophomore Spencer Mellon tying for 64th place at 81-76-82=239.
Scorers from UC’s Black team were: senior Andrew Desmarais tying for 38th at 75-75-79=229; sophomore Michael Wolf tying for 55th place at 78-77-79=234; sophomore Mike Irwin tying for 67th place at 77-75-88=240; junior Zach Bates finishing 69th at 86-81-77=244 and freshman Chris Correia finishing 72nd at 85-79-84=248.
UC freshman Adam Millson was playing as an individual and finished 71st at 88-81-78=247.
The Bearcats wrap up their fall schedule at the Cabo Intercollegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Oct. 15-17.
