For the first time in school history, the University of Cincinnati men’s golf team completed the fall season finishing in the Top 5 in every tournament, taking third place Sunday at the 36-hole Temple Invitational at Philmont Country Club (par 70 – 6,670 yards) in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
The Bearcats improved from seventh place after the first round on Saturday to finish third at 20-over par 292-288=580 in the 17-team field. Hartford won the team title carding a 2-over 282-280=562. St. John’s took second place at 17-over 293-284=577.
Earlier this fall, UC won the Cleveland Invitational (Oct. 1); tied for second at the Marshall Invitational (Sept. 10); took third place at the Bearcat Invitational (Oct. 8); and finished fifth at the Cardinal Intercollegiate (Sept. 24).
UC sophomore Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) led all Bearcats, tying for sixth place with three other players at 73-70=143. Newsome entered the day tied for 17th and was 3-under through 12 holes. After bogies on Nos. 13 and 14 and a double bogey on No. 17, Newsome birdied No. 18 to finish at even par for the final round. It marks Newsome’s highest tournament finish of the fall season and his fourth consecutive in the Top 25.
Bearcats junior Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) also registered his fourth Top 25 finish of the fall season, tying for 14th place at 5-over 71-74=145 in the 93-player field. Junior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) and freshman Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) tied with eight other players for 24th place on the individual leaderboard. O’Kelley (7-over 76-71=147) started the day tied for 48th place but climbed into a tie for 24th place after posting a career-best 1-over par 71 on Sunday for his third consecutive Top 25 finish. Reeves registered his fifth consecutive Top 25 finish at 7-over 74-73=147.
UC junior John Michael O'Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) ended the tournament tied for 45th place at 10-over 74-76=150. Sophomore Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) played the tournament as an individual and tied for 55th place at 72-80=152.
Harvard (286-296=582), host Temple (286-296=582) and Seton Hall (291-291=582) tied for fourth place in the team standings. Binghamton finished seventh at 295-288=583. Penn was eighth at 291-298=589. Richmond took ninth at 290-302=592. Princeton was 10th at 301-292=593. Rhode Island earned 11th at 303-292=595. La Salle was 12th at 307-300=607. Cornell (309-300=609) finished in 13th place. Dartmouth (306-306612) and Saint Joseph’s-Philadelphia (301-311=612) tied for 14th place. Brown (318-298=616) and Fordham (314-302=616) tied for 16th place.
UC begins its spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate, Feb. 17-18, in Houston, Texas.
