The University of Cincinnati men’s golf team takes part in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship April 27-29 at Innisbrook Beach Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. The three-day event will be played on the Copperhead Course (par 71; 7,125 yards) beginning Sunday at 8 a.m. ET.

The event features all 10 American teams, including four ranked among the Top 35 in the nation, according to GolfStat rankings: No. 7 UCF, No. 9 Houston, No. 30 USF and No. 31 SMU. Memphis (No. 46) and Louisville (No. 56) are also highly ranked.

“The American is loaded this year with six teams in the Top 60,” UC head coach Doug Martin said. “It’s very important for us to limit our unforced errors and focus on things that we can control.

“The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook sets up really well for our team. I’m really familiar with the course, so we’ll make sure our game plan is solid.”

The Bearcats, listed No. 95 in the Golfstat rankings, continue to raise the program’s competitiveness, finishing in the Top 5 in the team standings in nine of 11 tournaments this year -- nearly doubling the number of Top 5 finishes in the previous five years combined.

Cincinnati is coming off a third-place finish in the 13-team field at the Bluegrass Invitational on April 13. The Bearcats finished behind only No. 33 Kentucky and No. 26 Auburn. Three Bearcats completed action among the 15 players in the 78-person field. Junior Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) tied for seventh at 1-under par 215. Freshman Jared O’Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) tied for 10th at even par 216 while sophomore Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) tied for 12th at 2-over 218.

Howard leads all Bearcats with a 72.3 stroke average this season. Junior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) is second at 73.7 and Newsome is third at 73.8. Howard’s stroke average is half a shot better than what current PGA tour player and former Bearcat Jim Herman recorded in his best season at Cincinnati.

Junior John Michael O’Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) will join Howard, Reeves, O’Kelley and Newsome as the five Bearcats competing at the conference tournament.
