COLUMBUS – Members of the University of Cincinnati department of athletics traveled to Columbus Tuesday as five student-athletes were recognized for winning BIG EAST Conference titles in their respective sports.

Making the trip were women’s cross country and track and field head coach Susan Seaton, and women’s track and field squad members Mackenzie Fields (pole vault/Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemount) and Emelie Larsson (javelin/Gothenburg, Sweden/Polhemgymnasiet). University administrators included Margie Rolf, assistant vice president for governmental relations and Mike Carroll, assistant vice president for governmental relations.

Absent from Tuesday’s activities, but honored with Fields and Larsson, were men’s track and field student-athletes Josh Dangel (pole vault/Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and Terrence Somerville (hurdles/Akron, Ohio/Buchtel). Men’s golf standout David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) was also recognized for his accomplishments this year.

Ohio House Representative Denise Driehaus (31st House District) gave the Bearcats their resolutions, recognizing each student-athlete for their 2013 BIG EAST titles. Seaton thanked both the House of Representatives and the Senate for their support and acknowledgment of UC athletics. After the House session, Senator Eric Kearney (9th District) joined the Bearcats in the House of Chambers for a formal Senate proclamation.

Both Driehaus’ and Kearney’s districts include UC and each spoke of their excitement and pride in having conference champions in their respective areas. Fields and Larsson captured their attention describing the specific techniques involved in their events.

Dangel, Fields, Larsson and Somerville each have had record-setting seasons in their events this year. Dangel holds the Gettler Stadium record in the men’s outdoor pole vault, while Fields ended her career with the Bearcats as the school and Gettler Stadium record-holder in the women’s outdoor pole vault. Larsson set the school record in the javelin during the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, while Somerville set the school record at the conference championships then broke his own record at the NCAA East Preliminaries. Tepe became just the fourth UC student-athlete in school history to participate in the NCAA golf tournament and the first since 1974.

Tuesday’s House of Representatives session will be made available later in the week on www.ohiochannel.org.
