CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior David Tepe defeated Tyler Smith 4 and 3 in the opening round of match play competition Tuesday at the Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Summit Hills Country Club.
Tepe, representing Four Bridges Country Club, will take on Marty Arnzen of Highland Country Club in second-round action Thursday at 7:30 a.m. ET. The winner plays again at 12:30 p.m. in the third round.
Tepe is the top seed in the 64-player match play event after finishing first in the 200-player, two-round stroke play qualifying competition Monday and Tuesday at both Summit Hills Country Club (6,400 yards, par 70) and Hyde Park Golf & Country Club (6,650 yards, par 70). Tepe posted a 2-under par 69-69=138 to finish ahead of former UC player Joe Kastelic's 1-over par 70-71=141.
UC sophomore Michael Wolf, representing Heritage Club, was seeded No. 36 in the match play competition but lost to No. 29-seed Rob Chappell of the Blue Ash Golf Club in 19 holes. Wolf carded a 10-over par 76-74=150 to tie for 29th place during qualifying.
Seeded 10th in the match play event, incoming freshman Blake Hamilton also advanced to the second round after defeating Andrew Slotta of Wetherington Golf & Country Club 6 & 4. Hamilton, representing Traditions Golf Club, will compete against No. 42-seed Pete Betzold of Sharon Woods Golf Course beginning Thursday at 9:09 a.m.
The event runs through Saturday.
