CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior David Tepe and incoming freshman Blake Hamilton each won a pair of match play contests Thursday to advance to the quarterfinal round at the Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Summit Hills Country Club.
Tepe, the tournament's top seed who is representing Four Bridges Country Club, rallied in both matches Thursday, defeating No. 33-seeded Marty Arnzen of Highland Country Club in 21 holes in the second round and No. 17-seeded Matt Wetterich of Clovernook Country Club 1 up in the third round. Tepe forced extra play by the winning the 18th hole in his match against Arnzen. He came back from a 5-hole deficit against Wetterich to earn the victory on the 18th hole.
Hamilton played golf at Ryle High School in Kentucky and is the tournament's 10th seed representing Traditions Golf Club. He defeated No. 42 seed Pete Betzold of Sharon Woods Golf Course 2 and 1 in the second round and No. 58 seed Chris Dayton of Golf Club at Stonelick Hills 5 and 4 in third-round action.
Tepe, from Liberty Township, Ohio and Lakota East High School, will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Friday in quarterfinal play against No. 57 seed George Rohde III of Hyde Park Golf & Country Club. Should Tepe advance he would compete in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Hamilton tees off at 7:48 a.m. against No. 15 seed Bill Williamson of Coldstream Country Club. If Hamilton wins he would start his semifinal match at 12:39 p.m.
