CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati senior David Tepe has reached the finals of the Metropolitan Amateur Championship with a pair a match play victories Friday at Summit Hills Country Club.
As the tournament’s top seed representing Four Bridges Country Club, Tepe defeated his quarterfinal and semifinal opponents by identical 2 and 1 scores and will play No. 15-seeded Bill Williamson of Coldstream Country Club for the championship beginning Saturday at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Tepe outlasted No. 57-seeded George Rohde III of Hyde Park Golf & Country Club 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals. He built a three-hole lead after the 12th hole before holding off a late surge by Rohde. Later in the day in semifinal play, Tepe grabbed the lead on the 11th hole and maintained a least a one hole advantage before defeating fifth-seeded Andrew Dorn of Four Bridges Country Club 2 and 1.
Tepe, a native of Liberty Township, Ohio earned the top seed in the 64-player match play event after finishing first in the 200-player, two-round stroke play qualifying competition Monday and Tuesday at both Summit Hills Country Club (6,400 yards, par 70) and Hyde Park Golf & Country Club (6,650 yards, par 70).
Incoming UC freshman Blake Hamilton, seeded 10th in the tournament and representing Traditions Golf Club, lost his quarterfinals matchup with Williamson 5 and 4. Hamilton played golf at Ryle High School in Kentucky.
