University of Cincinnati sophomore Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga.) posted a final-round 2-under par 69 Tuesday to tie for second place with a 73-70-69=212 at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Invitational at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Emerson finished five strokes behind the tournament's winner, Ben Wolcott, who registered a 6-under 67-70-70=207.
Emerson entered the final round tied for fifth place but jumped in the standings after recording an eagle on the par-5 13th hole and a birdie on the par-3 14th hole.
Earlier this summer, Emerson qualified for the Dogwood Invitational, a prestigious amateur tournament that took place in Atlanta in late June. He did not make the cut after three rounds.
Newsome played in every tournament for the Bearcats during the 2012-13 campaign, leading the team with a 75.18 stroke average. As a freshman, Newsome registered three Top-20 finishes, including medalist honors at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship where he posted a season-best 6-under 210. He also finished 17th at the BIG EAST Championship.
