SETTING THE SCENE: Cincinnati gears up for its second men's golf tournament of the fall, when the Bearcats travel to West Chicago, Ill. for the John Dallio Memorial, hosted by DePaul. The 54-hole, two-day tournament will be held on Sept. 25-26 at the Prairie Landing Golf Club. Geoff Newman, fresh off a top-10 finish at the season-opening John Piper Intercollegiate, will once again lead the Bearcats at the tournament.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2006 edition of the John Dallio Memorial features 14 teams from the Midwest gathering at the Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago, Ill. Saint Louis won the team title last season, but will not defend its title this year. Joining UC and the host DePaul Blue Demons are Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, Loyola (Ill.), Northern Iowa, Notre Dame, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wright State and Youngstown State. Play begins on Monday at 7:10 a.m. CT with 36 holes, followed by the final 18 holes at 7:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday. UC will be out to improve upon its performance last year at the Dallio Memorial, when the Bearcats tied for 11th in the team standings.
THE LINE-UP: Cincinnati's line-up features four of the five players that competed at the season-opening John Piper Intercollegiate, with freshman Blake Tucker replacing Paul Marshall. Senior Geoff Newman sits atop the line-up after tying for seventh at the Piper Intercollegiate. Other members of the Bearcats' line-up are senior Joe Young, junior Alex Wenzel and sophomore Albert Fernandez.
NEW LEADERSHIP: The Bearcats will begin this season with a change at the top as Doug Martin has replaced Sonny Rinala as assistant coach in charge of the men's program. Martin will add a great deal of experience to the team as he played on the PGA Tour from 1991-99 and was very accomplished as an amateur. In 1989, he was ranked as the top amateur player in the country and was also a three-time All-American at the University of Oklahoma. Professionally, Martin scored two tour victories and lost a five-hole playoff to Vijah Singh at the 1995 Buick Classic at Westchester. Currently, Martin is an instructor in the Cincinnati-area and is manager and part owner of The Golf Ranch in Burlington, Ky.
NEWCOMERS: UC's fall walk-on tryouts produced a pair of additions to the Bearcats' roster. Sophomore Ryan Heinly (Monroe, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Ryan Cahill (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) join the freshman Blake Tucker (Findlay, Ohio/Owens CC) as newcomers on the 2006-07 roster.
