Bearcat Invitational Begins Monday|
Oct. 7, 2012
HEBRON, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team plays host to the Bearcat Invitational Oct. 8-9 at Traditions Golf Club (par 72, 7,100 yards).
The tournament will feature 36 holes of action on Monday with play beginning with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. ET. Final-round play starts Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
"We are thrilled to play host to this event," UC head coach Doug Martin, "Traditions Golf Club has gone out of its way to host this tournament in a first-class manner. We are fortunate to have a facility that opens its arms to accommodate our program."
The two-day, 54-hole event features 13 competing teams, including two squads from UC. Other schools participating include Austin Peay, Belmont, Cleveland State, Dayton, Detroit, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Wright State and Youngstown State. Kentucky has four individuals also taking part in the tournament.
UC's first team is led by sophomore Spencer Mellon (Oakmont, Pa./Central Catholic) and also includes sophomore Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), freshman Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga.), senior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) and freshman Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle).
Mellon is coming off a good effort at the Cardinal Intercollegiate where he shot an 8-over par 75-74-75=224 to tie for 42nd place. Tepe led the Bearcats at the Marshall Invitational where he tied for 12th after an even-par 70-75-68=213.
"The team's level of success this season is going to be based around two things," Martin said. "David knows he has to play well for us. Everyone team's No. 1 man around college golf carries a heavy burden with having to play well every week," Martin said. "But the other players have to step up and play well too. This tournament is important for the entire team. We're young and playing on your course helps."
The second unit will include senior Andrew Desmarais (Union, Ky./Ryle), junior Zach Bates (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), sophomores Mike Irwin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) and freshman Chris Correia (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School). Freshman Adam Millson (Union, Ky./Cooper) will be competing as an individual.
"Having two teams compete in the tournament gives some of the guys who haven't played a lot of golf this season an opportunity to show what they can do in a competitive tournament."
