DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati men’s soccer team competed in a pair of spring games in North Carolina over the weekend, tying North Carolina State University 0-0 on Sat., April 6 and falling to Duke University 3-0 on Sun., April 7.
“Overall the weekend was challenging for us, playing two quality ACC teams on the road in back-to-back games” said head coach Hylton Dayes. “I thought we had a good outing on Saturday against N.C. State, but not so good on Sunday against Duke. We need a good week of training leading up to our next match vs. NKU on Friday.”
In the game against the N.C. State Wolfpack, the both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half, but neither was able to net a goal. The Bearcats’ two best chances came off a free kick from sophomore Emmanuel Appiah (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) late in the game and a header off a cross from redshirt junior Peter Jannelli (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) that sailed just wide of the goal.
The Wolfpack had a few good looks at goal as well, but redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Hafling (Louisville, Ky./Male) did not concede a goal. N.C. State saw a long range shot hit the post, but for the second time this spring season, Hafling played all 90 minutes while keeping a clean sheet.
“We are pleased with the effort against the N.C. State on Saturday” said Dayes. “Playing on the road against a good ACC team was a big test for us. I thought we defended well and had some good moments where we possessed the ball well and created chances during the run of play.”
In the 3-0 loss at Duke on Sunday, the Bearcats gave up two early goals off of restarts and could not recover. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) played the final 25 minutes between the pipes for Cincinnati without allowing a goal.
The Bearcats will complete their spring season with a game against Northern Kentucky University at 7 p.m. on Fri., April 12 at Gettler Stadium. The team will also hold its annual alumni match at 2 p.m. on Sun., April 14, also at Gettler Stadium.
