DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team stayed unbeaten on the spring season with a 3-0 win against Western Michigan and 0-0 draw against host Dayton at the Dayton Spring Tournament on Saturday (April 11).
In the first match of the day, the Bearcats and Flyers played to a 0-0 tie. Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) and Miguel Rosales (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) combined for the shutout in goal. UC defended well throughout, led by Luke Henke (Wauwatosa, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran), who will enter his senior season in the fall as the most experienced defender for the Bearcats.
In game two, UC handled Western Michigan, 3-0. The Bearcats scored all three goals in the second half, beginning with a penalty kick goal by Judson McKinney (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Crhistian Academy), who tallied after Francesco Furio (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was dragged down in the box.
The Bearcats added on when a Sam Klosterman (Bellville, Ill./Bellville West) cross was knocked down in the box by Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and sent to Tristan Watson, who put UC up, 2-0. The final goal came in spectacular fashion as Colby Catlett (Dublin, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) sent a cross to the far post, where a fully-extended Furio buried the diving header for a three-goal lead.
UC is 2-0-2 on the spring season. The Bearcats will continue the spring slate when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for dates with IUPUI and Indiana on Wednesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., respectively.
