INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Junior Kenny Anaba (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) scored in the 51st minute, leading the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team to a 1-0 win against IUPUI at Kuntz Stadium on Monday (Aug. 14) in the exhibition opener for both squads.
Anaba, a third team All-BIG EAST selection in 2005, beat three defenders in the IUPUI box and rifled a shot to the far post past Jaguar keeper Peter Brasovan for the game-winner.
Senior Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and junior John-Michael Boggs (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) combined for the shutout. Vessells made one save while Boggs added four stops for the Bearcats.
UC outshot the Jaguars, 18-11, in the first meeting between the teams since IUPUI topped the Bearcats, 2-1, in the 2004 regular-season opener.
Cincinnati will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., on Thursday, Aug. 17, for the IPFW Soccer Showcase. The Bearcats will square off against Michigan State at 6 p.m. in the first match of the showcase from IPFW's Hefner Soccer Complex.
