FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Kwame Sarkodie (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) scored the game-winner in the 86th minute off of an Omar Cummings (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Cincinnati State) corner kick and the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team topped Michigan State, 1-0, in the opening match of the IPFW Soccer Showcase. The Bearcats improve to 2-0 in the exhibition season with the win after defeating IUPUI on Monday by the same 1-0 score.
Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and John-Michael Boggs (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar) shared the shutout.
"We were pleased with the effort," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "We saw an improvement in our possession and our attacking against a veteran Michigan State team. They are a pretty tough team to break down, but we got into a lot of good attacking positions."
The Bearcats resume their exhibition season on Aug. 20 against Michigan at Gettler Stadium. Kickoff between UC and the Wolverines is set for 2 p.m. Admission is free. The regular season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 25, at rival Xavier, while the home opener is Tuesday, Aug. 29, against Bradley.
