CINCINNATI - Despite John Manga netting the first goal of the match, the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team was unable to come away with a decision, falling to SMU, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Gettler Stadium. The loss drops the Bearcats to 3-9-1 and 0-5 in American Athletic Conference action, while the Mustangs improved to 3-8-1, 2-1-1 in league play.

The pace was slow early, as both teams took some time to warm-up their respective attacks. Once the flow improved, it was UC jumping out to a lead off the foot of Manga (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) in the 20th minute.

The sophomore took a play from Will Diebold (Coppell, Texas/Jesuit College Prep), who slid it right down the middle from the top of the box to find Manga. Manga was then able to beat SMU keeper Jaime Ibarra to the keeper's right for the 1-0 Bearcat lead.

UC carried that advantage into the half, but saw the lead evaporate quickly in the second 45 minutes.

Leobardo Vazquez opened the Mustang scoring with a connection on a cross from Deshawon Nembhard in the 57th minute to even the match. Just 1:47 later, Vazquez put the Mustangs ahead, this time taking a feed from Damian Rosales and finding the touch during a scramble in front of the net.

Vazquez then completed the hat trick, this time scoring off a corner by Eddie Puskarich, to provide the final margin of 3-1.

The Mustangs outshot UC, 19-5, for the match, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. UC keeper Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) made six saves while taking the loss. Ibarra made one save for SMU in the win.

The Bearcats now look to rebound as they take a break from conference play in the upcoming week. UC hosts IUPUI at Gettler Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 16, before playing host to Belmont on Saturday, Oct. 19.
