LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped its second straight BIG EAST road match, 1-0, at No. 25 Louisville, after Othaniel Yanez scored his first goal in the 85th minute. UC fell to 5-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference action.
"This was a very hard-fought soccer match," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "I'd like to commend our players on the way they competed. In the end, it came down to one pivotal play in the closing minutes and Louisville made that play. You have to give them credit."
On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Bearcats dropped a 1-0 decision at Syracuse after allowing an 89th-minute goal.
A scoreless first half was highlighted by an Aaron Clapham shot off the crossbar for the Cardinals and strong defense by both squads.
Chris Thompson (New South Wales, Australia/Univ. of New Castle) lifted a shot over the goal after a scrum inside the box in the opening minutes of the second half, UC's best opportunity to that point.
Patrick Baxter (Cincinnati, OH/Wyoming) earned a free kick just outside the Louisville box in the 62nd minute, but the ensuing set piece was played over the endline, ending the threat.
As the clock was winding down in the second stanza, Yanez corralled a pass in the UC box and his shot deflected off a Bearcat defender, over the head of Miguel Rosales (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill) for the deciding goal.
UC is now 0-7-1 away from Gettler Stadium this season.
The Bearcats return to the friendly confines of Gettler Stadium, where they are 5-0-0 and have outscored opponents 14-1, on Saturday, Oct. 20. UC takes on perennial power St. John's at 7 p.m. on "Pack the House Night."
