CINCINNATI - Cole DeNormandie scored in the 88th minute and the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team defeated Rutgers, 1-0, on Saturday night at Gettler Stadium.
DeNormandie scored for the second straight game and has figured in the last four Bearcats (6-7-4, 3-3-2 BIG EAST) goals (2G, 2A).
After controlling play for 87+ minutes of action with nothing to show for it, UC broke through in the 88th minute when Shamar Shelton carried the ball down the left flank. He sent a cross into the box and on to the foot of DeNormandie. The sophomore forward settled the ball and hit a right-footed shot over Rutgers goalkeeper Kevin McMullen, off the bottom of the crossbar and in for his third goal of 2012.
UC posted its eighth shutout of the season with Taylor Hafling making two saves. The Bearcats have allowed just three goals in seven home matches this season and have six shutouts in the last eight home contests dating to 2011.
The Bearcats outshot the Scarlet Knights, 19-9, and created the bulk of the chances.
Late in the first half, the Bearcats had two opportunities to get on the board. Matt Remaley found himself one-on-one with McMullen, but the Rutgers keeper was up to the task and made a point blank save to keep things level.
Moments later, following an Emmanuel Appiah free kick from outside the box on the right flank, David Murrow hit a low shot through traffic that beat McMullen, but clanged squarely off the left post and out of harms way as the first half whistle sounded.
UC jumped into third place in the BIG EAST Red Division with just one week left to play. Division-leading Louisville comes to Gettler Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 27, for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Senior Night. The Bearcats will honor seven seniors prior to the contest with a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament on the line.
