Nov. 8, 2013
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team saw its season come to a close on Friday, Nov. 8, after a 5-1 loss to Rutgers in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
A match which was scoreless in the 45 minutes saw Rutgers and Kene Eze erupt in the second half. After an early goal by UC's Peter Jannelli (Springfield, Pa./LaSalle), the Scarlet Knights responded with five unanswered goals, including four from Eze, to advance to the quarterfinals.
The first half saw neither team find the back of the net, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 7-5 lead in shots and a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. In addition to the five shots on target, each team had a couple scoring opportunities that went just wide of the post.
Early in the second half, Jannelli took matters into his own hands. The senior beat two defenders before beating the RU keeper low to give UC a 1-0 lead. It marked the first goal of the year for Jannelli.
The Scarlet Knights responded almost immediately when Vassiliadis took an initial shot that was saved by Gill. Drew Morgan took another shot which hit the crossbar, leaving Gill out of position and Eze took advantage to score the equalizer.
Things settled down a bit for the next 15 minutes or so before Rutgers was able to take a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute. Mael Corboz took a corner from the near side and sent it low in front where Morgan found it and converted for his first goal of the season.
The Scarlet Knights extended the lead in the 68th minute when they took advantage of a UC turnover when the Bearcats misplayed a short corner. Nathan Bruccoleri won it for Rutgers and took it immediately down the field before finding Eze who beat Gill for his second of the match.
Eze then put the match on ice for the Scarlet Knights with the hat trick. The UC backs miscommunicated, allowing Eze to win the ball and then beat Gill. The 75th minute goal put RU up 4-1. Eze would add his fourth goal in the 81st minute on a play when Kieran Kemmerer played it forward from the midfield. The 5-1 margin would provide the final score.
Rutgers keeper David Greczek made five saves to earn the victory, while UC's Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) made four saves in the loss. For the match, RU outshot the Bearcats, 18-12, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.
The victory sends Rutgers into tomorrow's quarterfinals, where they will take on the league's regular season champion, No. 7/8 Louisville. UC finishes the season at 6-12-1.
