CINCINNATI, Ohio--Former University of Cincinnati soccer standouts Sam Miller and Kwame Sarkodie have signed professional contracts with the Cincinnati Kings of the United Soccer Leagues' (USL) Second Division.
"We wish Kwame and Sam all the best as they begin their professional soccer careers with the Kings," head coach Hylton Dayes said. "They have represented UC and our program extremely well the past four years and we will certainly miss them."
Miller, a four-year starter in the central midfield for the Bearcats, scored seven goals and added one assist in 77 career matches. A Cincinnati native and Anderson High School graduate, Miller started all but one match over his final three seasons and was named to the 2003 Conference USA All-Freshman team.
"We're really excited to get the opportunity to play at the next level, especially with a quality organization like the Kings," Miller said. "During my time at UC, I feel like the coaches prepared us well, making us better every year, both on and off the field."
A versatile athlete, Sarkodie spent time on the backline as well as at wide midfielder during his career with UC. The Dayton native and Carroll High School graduate scored three goals and posted six assists over 69 contests.
"I'm excited to start my professional career with a great organization like the Kings," Sarkodie commented. "Coach Dayes and the entire UC coaching staff helped me to improve all the aspects of my game and I am thankful for my time spent as a Bearcat."
The pair led UC to two conference regular-season titles, including the first BIG EAST team championship in school history, as well as a pair of NCAA Tournament berths.
Miller and Sarkodie become the eighth and ninth Bearcats since 2004 to be drafted or sign professional contracts, joining All-American Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids - MLS, `07), Ewan Blair (Cincinnati Kings - USL2, `06), Jeremiah Gallegos (L.A. Galaxy - MLS, `05), Jeff Hughes (Cincinnati Kings - USL2, `05), John Liersemann (Cincinnati Kings - USL2, `05), Josh Gardner (L.A. Galaxy - MLS, `04), and Tim Brown (Richmond Kickers - USL2, `04).
The Cincinnati Kings will start their third season in the USL Second Division on the road against the defending champion Richmond Kickers on April 21. The first home match for the Kings will be April 28 versus the expansion Cleveland City Stars. The Kings will play a 20-game regular-season schedule with 10 matches at home and 10 on the road.
Fans will have a chance to see Miller and Sarkodie take on their former squad when UC hosts the Bearcat Invitational on April 15 at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats will take on the Kings at 11 a.m., with the Kings matching up with Northern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. UC then hosts NKU in the final match of the day at 2 p.m.
