Men's Soccer Turns Towards Regular Season

Aug. 25, 2014

The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team has concluded exhibition play and now turns towards the regular season this week. The Bearcats travel across the Ohio River on Friday, Aug. 29, to open the season at Northern Kentucky, while the home opener is on Monday, Sept. 1, versus Wright State at 7:00 p.m.

John Manga (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) was selected Man of the Match of the team's second exhibition game, a 4-1 victory at Evansville. Manga opened the scoring and had three goals in UC's two exhibition games. The junior scored three goals last season and is expected to be one of the team's leaders on the attack this year.

While Manga's talent on the pitch shines, his journey to the University of Cincinnati is even more impressive. Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Manga arrived in the United States as a refugee of that nation's civil war. University of Cincinnati Magazine profiled Manga's story last fall. The Bearcats take the pitch with one of the most experienced teams in the nation in 2014. UC returns over 80% of its scoring from a season ago, with a mark of 81.3 percent that ranks 12th in the nation. The squad also enters the year with 308 combined starts, a total which ranks seventh in the nation.

In the 4-1 exhibition win at Evansville, Cincinnati got the better of one of the few teams in the country with more experience. The Purple Aces bring back 97.1 percent of their scoring and 422 starts, but it was the Bearcats who took the match.
