Postgame Quotes

UC head coach Jamelle Elliott

Opening Statement:

“Coming into this game, we knew it was going to be hard, and I say because we went into the game missing two of our point guards. So we knew we were going to have to really face some adversity against a really good SMU team. Coming from Conference USA they were consistently the top team in the conference, so we knew that this was going to be a tough team coming in as our first home game in conference play. We did what we couldn’t and that was starting off slow, which allowed them to get confidence and get easy buckets. We did recover, but we had too many lapses on both ends of the floor to make a comeback and beat a good team without being full strength.”

On if it was a tough spot for Bianca Quisenberry being it a first game as a starter:

“Yeah, as a freshman starting her first game at home against a very good SMU team, we only hoped that she would have success. The same success that she had against UConn in spurts and the same success she has had against Youngstown State when she was knocking down shots. Did it get a bit overwhelming? Probably, but I know Bianca will never stop. She will never stop trying and with experiencing we will continue to get games under her belt. When she is in that same situation again I think it will be a different result.”

On starting slow in beginning of both halves:

“We just didn’t have the energy today to sustain it. We were successful in the past. We sustained our defensive of intensity for 40 minutes. Today it was just too many spurts there where we were stagnate, and we weren’t being aggressive. We struggled shooting the ball, and I thought our defense let us down a little bit. We still held them under their average, so we still made it tough for them. But I thought we gave up a lot of points in transition. I thought we missed guys weak side a lot and gave up some easy buckets. So defensively, it was still okay, but I thought we could have been better. Offensively, we just have to find a way to get some consistent scoring throughout the game. All year long our pattern has been going on three-four-five minute droughts of not being able to score. You can’t do that now that we are in conference play, we have to find a way to get to the free throw line and get some easy buckets so that the bleeding isn’t so bad. I’m saying all that, and we only lost by 11. So if we can tighten up some the little things and find a way to make some shots, I still like our chances.”

On if the UConn game had any lapses into this game:

“I don’t know. We talked about how you can’t just get up for the number one team in the country. You have to have the same approach for the number one team in the country as you do against everybody. Every game we have to play against UConn, and I don’t know if we came out today like we were playing the number one team in the country because it didn’t show. That is a mindset. Were we looking for Dayeehsa (Hollins) I don’t know? But at the end of the day we still could have found a way to be successful today and we just didn’t.”

On not coming out with much energy today:
"We just didn't come out the way we usually come out. We were really flat. That is sort of what happened in practice too. No energy. That is just not us. That is not the way we have played all year. We are going to go to the gym and work on playing with a lot of energy."

On if the energy had anything to do with the UConn game:
"I don't think so. It shouldn't have. We know they are the number one team, and we did a lot of things that other teams didn't do against them. I would think that we would have come out with a different mind-set. Against the number one team, we got any shot that we wanted. This team here was equally matched with us. We just didn't have any energy today."

On if other people need to step up with the injuries:
"I think other people will start to step up. It was one of the first games that we had freshmen doing freshmen things, but they work hard every day in practice. It should be just like practice. We are working on it. We are going to work on it tomorrow and definitely come out stronger than we did today."

On playing another top ten team like Louisville next:
"We just know what they do. We know that they trap. We know that they are really aggressive. We just have to work on us. We aren't really going to be worried about what they do. We are just going to worry about the things that we have to do to beat them."
