SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- Jill Stephens (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds but the University of Cincinnati (9-4, 0-1) lost its BIG EAST season opener, 54-43, at host Seton Hall (10-2, 1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gym.
Carla Jacobs (Cleveland, Ohio/Regina) added 10 points for the Bearcats and Kahla Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) pulled down eight rebounds but UC shot 28.8% from the floor and connected on 3-for-16 from behind the three point line for a low offensive output on the day.
Cincinnati started slow, scoring its first bucket when Roudebush hit a three pointer in the corner at the 17:31 mark. A four point spurt put the Bearcats up one, 7-6, but the Pirates reacted immediately with four points of their own, going up 10-7 with 11:47 to go in the half. UC pulled within one on a Jacobs jumper with 10:23 to play before Seton Hall found its groove, connecting on back-to-back triples and scoring back-to-back fast break buckets off UC turnovers to go ahead by 10, 27-17 with 4:09 to play in the half. Tenishia Benson (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) hit two free throws to give UC 19, but the Pirates hit another three pointer and capped the half with a shot at the buzzer to take a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
Jacobs scored eight points in the first half but the Bearcats committed nine turnovers and shot only 29.2% from the floor. Seton Hall shot 46.4% from the field and connected on 4-of-6 three pointers in the first half, outrebounding the Bearcats 16-15.
Cincinnati did not allow the Pirates to score for the first 5:27 of the half and pulled within eight, 37-29, before giving up four unanswered points. UC stayed in the game with nine straight points from Stephens and got within seven, 41-34 with 4:54 to go in the game. Roudebush hit two free throws to bring the Bearcats within five, 41-36. Seton Hall reacted with five points before Stephens scored from downtown to bring the score to 46-39 with 3:07 to play. Seton Hall's Ebony Williams banked a three pointer with 1:54 to go that proved to be enough of a cushion for the victory.
Seton Hall had four players score in double figures, led by Williams' 13 points. Noteisha Womack finished the game with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 11 boards. The Pirates were outrebounded by the Bearcats, 35-27, but scored 20 points to UC's eight, in the paint.
Cincinnati returns to Fifth Third Arena for two BIG EAST Conference games beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008 when the Bearcats take on Georgetown during Ring of Red night. Pittsburgh comes to Cincinnati on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 for a 1 p.m. matinee.
