Hollins Leads Bearcats In 76-50 Loss To No. 2 Notre Dame|

CINCINNATI – Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan) led the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team (9-8, 0-4 BIG EAST) in its 76-50 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame (17-1, 5-0) on Saturday, January 14 at Fifth Third Arena. Hollins scored a team-high 14 points and dished out four assists.
The Fighting Irish put up a quick six points, but Hollins scored nine of UC’s first 13 to avoid a double-digit deficit, 20-13, with less than 12 minutes remaining. But back-to-back Notre Dame 3-pointers sparked a 14-4 run as the Fighting Irish pushed its lead to 38-19 with 3:45 left.
The Bearcats couldn’t make a basket for the final 3:12 of the half as UND headed into the locker room with a 42-21 lead.
Devereaux Peters scored all six in Notre Dame’s 6-2 run to start the second half. Hollins made a bucket in the first minute, but UC couldn’t score any more until the 12:45 mark after Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) was fouled on the shot and completed a three-point play to make it 58-26. Notre Dame didn’t make a basket for the next seven minutes, but continued to drain all its shots from the free throw line. he deficit was too much to overcome as UND settled the 76-50 score.
Notre Dame was led by Natalie Novosel with 21 points and Peters with 17 points. The Bearcats held UND leading scorer Skylar Diggins to just four points. However, Diggins had a game-high 11 assists.
Cincinnati shot just 38 percent (19-50) and Notre Dame shot 47 percent (29-61). Both teams struggled to get any looks on the perimeter, combining for 5-of-16 from behind the arc.
UC travels to take on No. 3 Connecticut on Thursday, Jan. 19 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
