CINCINNATI - Jeanise Randolph (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) scored 19 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, helping lead the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team to a 65-49 win over Memphis in American Athletic Conference play, Wednesday at Fifth Third Arena.
Randolph, who tied her career best with the scoring effort, also added a team-high 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season as the Bearcats (10-14, 3-10 American) snapped a four-game skid.
Memphis (11-14, 4-9 American) pulled within three in the first minute of the second half, 29-26 with 19:05 left and pulled back within five on three occasions before an 8-0 UC run, paced by six points from Randolph moved the lead to double digits, 48-35, with 9:51 remaining. UC never looked back, pushing the advantage to as many as 18 in the win.
UC finished 24-of-53 (.453) from the floor, its best shooting effort in 14 games. The Bearcats held off any Memphis scoring runs by never missing more than four attempts in a row while the defense held the Tigers to a .280 effort (17-of-60) from the floor along with 15 turnovers.
Ariel Hearn led the Tigers with 18 points and Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Pa'Sonna Hope pulled down 11 boards apiece.
The Bearcats led 27-21 at the break after a pressuring UC defense forced 12 turnovers with seven steals and converted them into 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
UC trailed by three, 10-7 in the early going, and later used a 15-8 run over 6:18 to pull ahead 24-18 with 4:52 remaining. During the run, UC hit seven of its 11 shots. The game had seven lead changes in the first 10 minutes until UC’s run.
Both teams went cold from there with a four-minute scoreless period before Quisenberry drained a three to put UC up 27-18 with 41 seconds left. Memphis' Mack added a three of her own with 20 ticks on the clock to make the halftime margin six at 27-21.
