Turner's Inside Swerve Lifts UC Past Marquette|

CINCINNATI - A layup by Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) with less than a second left snapped the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team's 10-game losing streak with a 54-52 win over Marquette in BIG EAST Conference action Wednesday at Fifth Third Arena.
Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan) brought the ball up the court with 13 seconds remaining, fought threw a double team and dished the ball inside to Turner who threw a head fake before lofting a layup that went in with under a second left, giving UC its first win in five games this season decided by five points or less.
Turner's layup snapped a 7:08 field-goal drought for both teams. The Bearcats trailed by four, 52-48 with 2:29 left and outscored Marquette 6-0 down the stretch to earn the win, holding an opponent under the 54-point mark for the 11th time during the 2012-13 campaign.
The final rally was set up out of a timeout that UC took following a pair of Marquette missed free throws with 14 ticks on the clock. The winning basket capped a game that saw 12 ties and nine lead changes.
Hollins and Marquette's Sarina Simmons each finished with a game-high 19 points. Hollins outscored the Golden Eagles from the free-throw line, going 8-of-10 while Marquette finished 6-of-8 as a team.
UC got to the line 22 times, knocking down 15 and also held a 34-31 rebounding edge over Marquette, who entered the game ranked among the top-40 rebounding teams in the nation. Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) led all players with seven boards.
The Bearcats had much success inside the paint, holding a 30-22 scoring advantage while converting 11 offensive rebounds into 12 points. UC also converted 18 MU turnovers into 13 points.
Cincinnati led 27-26 at the half after converting its 7-3 edge on the offensive boards into six points and turning 10 Marquette giveaways into eight points. The Bearcats and Golden Eagles each made 11 field goals with Hollins' 10 first-half points leading all players.
UC used a 12-0 run over 5:40 to lead 16-6 with 11:12 left but Marquette answered right back with a 13-2 run of its own, leading by one (19-18) with 8:32 left. UC retook the lead and pushed the advantage to five, leading 26-21, with 4:21 left before Marquette's Cristina Bigica scored five unanswered points to knot things up at 26 with 3:12 left.
Hollins split a pair of free throws with 2:58 remaining to close out the first-half scoring to send UC into the locker room with the 27-26 lead.
UC returns to action on Feb. 17, hitting the road to take on St. John's at 5 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
