CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team (15-13, 6-9 BIG EAST) was defeated by West Virginia (20-8, 10-5 BIG EAST), 66-62, on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats led by as much as 14, but the Mountaineers rallied in the second half to snap UC’s four-game winning streak on Senior Day.

Cincinnati’s two seniors led the way in a day honoring their careers. Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) led all scorers with 22 points, while Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./North Babylon/Vanderbilt) followed with 12 points and a team-best six rebounds. Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan) was the only other double-digit scorer with 11 points and a game-high five assists.

West Virginia fell behind 8-0 in the first two minutes by way of back-to-back Cook 3-pointers and couldn’t muster up much offense as Cincinnati went on a 16-2 to open the game. WVU didn’t make a basket for seven minutes, but then UC fell flat and allowed WVU to pull within five via an 8-0 run to make it 18-13 with 6:25 on the clock. The Mountaineers came within five, once again, before continuing on a 7-0 run to close the half.

Reaves nailed two-straight from downtown, but it was Cook’s 3-pointer that allowed UC to regain the lead, 43-42, midway through the second half. WVU kept fighting back, knotting it up five more times in the next seven minutes before taking the lead once and for all.

Asya Bussie and Cristal Caldwell each recorded 15 points for the Mountaineers.
