Cincinnati- The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College 61-41 Sunday in exhibition action at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
Leading the way for the Bearcats was junior forward Tiffany Turner who scored 14 points while adding nine rebounds. Kentucky Wesleyan was led by T’Essence Phelps who scored nine points and added 5 rebounds.
Also helping fuel the Bearcats’ victory was senior guard Dayeesha Hollins and junior forward Jeanise Randolph. Hollins scored nine points while adding eight assists. Randolph added to the scoring effort with 11 points while grabbing six rebounds.
After a first half which featured just two lead changes, UC had a 29-23 advantage at the half and never relinquished the lead. The Bearcats were anchored in the first half by junior Tiffany Turner who scored 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting while adding a pair of free throws. The Bearcat defense held Kentucky Wesleyan to just 36 percent shooting from the field in the first half while shooting 61.9 percent on the offensive end.
In the second half, the Bearcats began to pull away from the Panthers and never looked back. With 8:24 left in the second half UC extended its lead to 20 points where it would remain for the rest of the game. The post battle was won by UC who out-rebounded the Panthers 43-23 and outscored Kentucky Wesleyan 40-12 in the paint. UC finished the game shooting 54.5 percent from the field and made 12 of 22 free-throw attempts. UC’s defense was also able to force 17 turnovers.
Cincinnati will open its regular season when it hosts Northern Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats defeated NKU 72-66 last year in an exhibition match in Fifth Third Arena.
