CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 49-31 win against Northern Kentucky on Friday evening in Fifth Third Arena.
Dayeesha Hollins led the Bearcats (1-0) with a game-high 17 points and was joined in double figures by Alyesha Lovett, who dropped in 11.
The Bearcats were 16-of-22 from the free throw line and forced 23 Northern Kentucky (0-1) turnovers, the most for a UC opponent since High Point coughed it up 25 times on Nov. 29, 2011. UC scored 23 points off NKU turnovers.
After a slow start, the Bearcats used an 18-2 run over the final 9:30 of the first half to turn a 14-9 deficit into a 24-16 lead at the break. Ten points came from the free throw line, as UC got into the bonus after early NKU foul trouble.
Hollins had eight first-half points and was 5-of-5 from the free throw line. UC held NKU to 25 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes and forced 14 Norse turnovers.
Northern Kentucky went seven minutes without a field goal in the second half as UC pushed its lead to 37-20 with 10:10 to play. The Norse scored seven straight to cut the deficit to 10 at 37-27 with just over six minutes remaining, but a Lovett triple keyed a 12-4 run to close out the game.
Freshmen Jasmine Whitfield, Destini Feagin, and Alexis Durley each scored in their first collegiate action. Whitfield scored six points on 3-of-6 from the floor in 15 minutes.
Jeanise Randolph and Tiffany Turner grabbed nine rebounds apiece as the Bearcats outrebounded the Norse, 41-28.
UC will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
