NKU Downs Women's Basketball in Season Opener|

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team stumbled in the season opener Saturday night, falling on the road to Northern Kentucky University by a 77-61 score.
The Bearcats were playing catch up most of the evening, never able to regain a lead after an early 7-6 advantage. The Norse put up 77 points on 41.8 percent shooting (23-55) while the Bearcats shot just 36.4 percent (20-55) from the field. Northern Kentucky was aided by 17 Cincinnati turnovers, turning the miscues into 15 points.
The Bearcats cut the NKU lead to 21-20 with 6:29 left in the first half before the Norse put together a 14-7 scoring run to close out the first half. The Bearcats entered the second half trailing 35-27 and quickly found themselves down double-digits for the first time after NKU’s Kaitlyn Gerrety drained a three.
Cincinnati cut the lead down to 51-48 with 7:35 to play before the Norse exploded for an 11-0 run to put the contest away. NKU added six points from the free throw line while also draining a three during the spurt.
The Bearcats were led in scoring by freshman Marley Hill (Cleveland, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) who totaled 16 points in her collegiate debut. Hill went 6-of-13 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds in 25 minutes of play off the bench
Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) was the only other Bearcat to reach double digits in scoring, adding 13 points. The senior guard went 5-of-8 from the floor including 1-of-3 from long range.
Guard Alexis Durley (Houston, Texas/Andy Dekaney) led the team in rebounding with seven while also adding seven points and two assists.
Melody Doss led the Norse both offensively and defensively. The junior recorded a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She also swatted a pair of UC shots to go along with one steal and one assist. Kayla Thacker added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Norse.
