CANCUN, Mexico – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team held off a last-second Chattanooga (3-2) comeback and improved to 5-0 for the second-consecutive year when it defeated the Lady Mocs, 51-50, on Friday evening at the Cancun Challenge at the Moon Palace Resort. It is now one of only four undefeated BIG EAST teams remaining.
In a game in which UC never trailed, Chattanooga overcame four double-digit deficits and had three good looks with a chance to take the lead in the final 30 seconds, but every shot fell short and the Bearcats held on for the 51-50 victory.
The Bearcats were led by a hot-shooting Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan), who connected on 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field and a perfect 100 percent (3-of-3) from 3-point range. She was relied on heavily as Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon/Neosho County (Kan.)) found herself in foul trouble midway through the first half. Reaves finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./North Babylon/Vanderbilt) pitched in 11 points.
Hollins connected on her first three jumpers to give UC the early lead and built the margin up to as much as 12. Reaves and Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) both recorded three fouls in the first half. But Hollins stepped up, recording 16 first-half points, including two 3-pointers in the final five minutes to make the score 32-25 at halftime.
While Chattanooga was slow out of the gate in the second half, it managed to cut the lead to three, 37-34, with 10:10 remaining. Chisholm built the margin back up to double-figures with a 3-pointer two minutes later, but that didn’t stop the Lady Mocs, who continued to cut into Cincinnati’s lead. UTC was within one of the Bearcats three times in the final four minutes, but couldn’t get a shot to fall in the final seconds as UC held on for the victory.
The Lady Mocs were led by Kyle Lambert, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-best 13 boards and four assists. Whitney Hood shot 6-of-11 and pitched in 14 points. UTC outrebounded Cincinnati, 40-28, and shot 37.3 percent (19-51) from the field, while UC connected on 35.8 percent (19-53) of its shots.
Cincinnati will attempt to go 6-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 season when it hosts Morgan State on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
