CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team limited an opponent to fewer than 50 points for the third time this season en route to a 55-45 win over Morehead State Wednesday evening at Fifth Third Arena.
Making her third-career start, senior Lesha Dunn (Toronto, Ontario/Trinity Valley) scored Cincinnati’s first points of game, leading the team to a 4-0 start. UC was able to hold the Eagles (1-5) scoreless until the 15:28 mark when Terrice Robinson hit the Eagles’ first three-point basket.
After starting the contest just 2-for-9 from three-point range, MSU hit four-straight during a span of just over two minutes, sparking a 22-13 Eagles’ run. With Cincinnati trailing by five, Dayeesha Hollins’ (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) shot-clock beating, three-pointer pulled the team within two points at the 6:23 mark. Two made free throws from Hollins then tied the score at 22.
Aggressive offensive rebounding in the first half earned the Bearcats eight second-chance points and a 29-25 lead at the break. Cincinnati finished the first half with 21 rebounds compared to 15 for Morehead State. Sophomore guard Aleysha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) set a career-high in rebounds (7) with her first-half performance, eventually finishing with 10 in the contest.
Hollins (10) led all scorers, while Casey Ryans and Robinson’s six points for the Eagles carried the teams into their locker rooms.
Morehead St. coughed it up three straight times to open second half thanks to a solid defensive effort from UC. The Eagles turned the ball over just five times during the first 20 minutes. Back-and-forth scoring kept Bearcats’ lead to five or fewer entering the third media timeout at the 7:43 mark.
The Bearcats briefly pushed its lead to seven with 6:48 left with a quick jumper by Hollins. MSU’s Robinson brought the game back to 45-49 with her third made three. UC rattled off six straight points to win 55-49, holding the Eagles scoreless in the final 6:28 of play.
Bearcats never trailed in the second half, though Eagles’ shooting from three-point (9-24) land kept the match tight. Hollins led all scorers with 18 points for her fifth double-digit game this season. After Lovett’s career-high, first-time starter Chelsea Jamison and Hollins each contributed seven grabs.
