Postgame Quotes

Bearcats head coach Jamelle Elliot

On Morehead’s play and game overall:

“They only had one win coming in, but they’re a feisty group. They play hard for forty minutes, they want the game to be ugly, they stay in that zone for forty minutes and force you to make outside shots.  We knew this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. They’ve been down a lot and they’ve come back to cut the leads through out the game so we knew we were going to have our work cut out for us. We had three girls out with injuries that didn’t play and we had Chelsea Jamison making her first start. There were a lot of factors going in to this game and I told my team this is going to be a dangerous game. Unfortunately, in that first half we were covering a little too deep and leaving them wide open for 3’s and that penetration and kick. Good thing is we made the adjustment in the second half.”

On players stepping up in wake of injuries:

“I’m surprised a little bit. Dunn went from playing four or five minutes a game to over 30 minutes a game. And not just playing a lot of minutes, but playing well, this was her third straight game with double figure scoring. So I’m pleasantly surprised. Even with Chelsea, this was her first career start and she’s playing out of position, she’s a guard and we’re asking her to play in the post.”

On the Xavier rivalry:

“It’s a huge rivalry game. At the end of the day this is the biggest game of the year in the city of Cincinnati for women’s basketball. It’s an opportunity for several youth to come out and watch us play, to look out on the floor and see themselves out there in the years to come. We’ve sold over 9,000 tickets so we’re expecting a full house. One thing about this rivalry is there’s been times that they were in the top ten and we beat them and there’s been times that we were favored and they found a way to win. It’s anybody’s ballgame no matter what the outside factors are because both teams are going to give a hundred percent out on the court.”

Bearcats Player Quotes

No. 4, Center, Leesha Dunn

On the flow of tonight’s game:

“It was very stagnant and slow for us on offense. We knew that they were going to come out and shoot a lot of threes and not going to be very aggressive on the inside. So at first we lacked a lot of communication and we were slow getting over on stuff. I missed a lot of flare screens and it just took a lot for us to get back into the flow and play our game instead of playing to their hand, but we were able to do it by the second half. ”

On feeling more comfortable as playing time has increased:

“Firstly, I say my prayers every night and I have to give the praise to God because I feel as though he’s working through me. I mean I remember when I first came here, one of the first things that coach said to me was, ‘I didn’t recruit you to come here and lead in assists.’ I love passing to my guards and when they make a bucket I make a bucket. I’m not selfish or feel like I have to score a lot.”

On improvements she will have to make in the future:

“Going forward I know I’ll have to work on facing up more instead of playing only with my back to the basket because I will be facing girls my own size or bigger so that will be beneficial to myself and my team.”

No. 31, Guard, Dayeesha Hollins

On Morehead State’s play:

“Teams like that they don’t have anything to lose so they’re always going to come in and play hard and we’re ready to play every team the same way. We’re ready for anything and we know that every team is going to play hard so we have to play just as hard and match their level of competition.”

On how the team is coming together:

“We have each other’s back and when one of us goes down someone has to be ready to step up. Ever since the first person went down people have been ready to step up. You just anticipate that and you’re always ready. “

On Leesha Dunn’s play:

“I’m not surprised at all. She always had it in her.”

On the Xavier rivalry:

“We just know that they are a completely different team than Morehead who runs a five out one in motion offense so we just have to be ready to go out and play well on the inside and buckle down and guard those bigger post players that they have.”
