CINCINNATI – Kahla Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) scored a game-high 15 points and the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team defeated Savannah State, 64-34, on Saturday (Nov. 29) at Fifth Third Arena as part of the Courtyard by Marriott of Florence Thanksgiving Classic.
Roudebush added a game-high nine rebounds as the Bearcats outrebounded the Tigers, 40-24, including holding a 12-5 edge in offensive boards.
After falling behind early, 5-0, the Bearcats (4-1) scored the next 22 points to take a 22-5 lead at the 3:40 mark of the first half. The lead never dropped below 13 the rest of the game.
Cincinnati held the Tigers (2-5) to 34 points – the lowest opponent total since Detroit scored 31 in a 60-31 Bearcats win on Nov. 21, 2004 - and 28 percent shooting (13-46). UC has held each of its first five opponents to less than 60 points.
Jill Stephens (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) was the only other Bearcat in double figures with 11 points, but nine different Bearcats scored in the contest. Michelle Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and Tenishia Benson (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) added seven points apiece.
UC shot 20-of-28 from the free throw line and had 14 assists compared to just 12 turnovers.
“We did an excellent job of getting it inside tonight,” said head coach J. Kelley Hall. “Another byproduct of getting the ball inside is we went to the free throw line 28 times. Combine that with the fact that we outrebounded them by 16 and mission accomplished.”
Lashara Smith led the Tigers with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Bearcats wrap up the Courtyard by Marriott of Florence Thanksgiving Classic against Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m.
