CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team (6-3, 0-1) held the lead for the majority of the game, but came up short when it lost its BIG EAST opener to No. 13/14 Louisville (9-2, 1-0), 64-59, on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Four players scored in double figures for the Bearcats, including Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon/Neosho County (Kan.)) who led all scorers with 18 points, while Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) recorded her second double-double this season with 11 points and 11 boards.

Louisville put the first points on the board three seconds in, but UC kept it a close one – taking the lead for the next 10:30. The Bearcats held a five-point lead, 13-8, after a layup by Turner with 12:04 left on the clock, but then Louisville went on a 10-3 run to make it 18-13 in favor of the Cardinals. Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) hit one from downtown to pull UC within one, 23-22, with just under two minutes remaining. But UofL continued to press and headed into the half with a 26-22 lead.

The Bearcats tied it up three minutes into the second stanza and took the lead at the 14:31 mark when Hollins nailed a 3-ball to make it 36-33. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Cook and Reaves gave Cincinnati its largest lead, 46-39, midway through the second half, but Hollins left the game with a shoulder injury and UC was left to fend without its leading scorer. It maintained the lead until 2:37 was left on the clock and couldn’t hold on as the Cardinals shot a 4-of-4 at the line to settle the 64-59 score.

Ten players scored for Louisville, who was led by Shoni Schimmel with 16 points. It out rebounded UC, 38-32, and shot 38 percent (23-60) compared to UC’s 43 percent (21-49) from the field.

The Bearcats hit the road to rival Miami (OH) on Saturday, Dec. 17 for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
