Turner Leads Bearcats to 59-48 Win in Hawai'i

HONOLULU- After suffering an overtime loss to Hawai'i in overtime, the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team bounced back to defeat Long Island University-Brooklyn 59-48 in their final game of the Bank of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Invitational. 

UC used a trio of double-digit scorers to down the Blackbirds Sunday afternoon. Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) finished with a team-high 15 points while Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) added 14 off the bench. Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woos/Michigan) finished with 12 points, marking her 24th consecutive game with double-digits.

The 48 points scored by LIU-Brooklyn mark the sixth time this season that UC has limited an opponent to less than 50 points. The Bearcat defense held the Blackbirds to 32 percent shooting from the field. LIU-Brooklyn also finished just 2-of-10 from behind the three-point line.

Neither team was able to grab a substantial lead through the first 10 minutes of play, with the game featuring the fourth tie of the afternoon at 15 all with 9:54 to play in the half. However, UC went on to score the next seven points of the contest, taking a 22-15 lead. The spurt, which spanned 3:45, featured jumpers from Lovett and Alexis Durley (Houston, Texas/Andy Dekaney). The run was capped with a three from Hollins. LIU-Brooklyn missed five straight shots and turned the ball over once during UC’s 7-0 advantage.

Cincinnati took their biggest lead of the half with1:32 to play after a jumper from Turner made the score 30-20. The Blackbirds eventually hit a pair of free throws before the break to make it an eight-point UC lead at the half.

LIU-Brooklyn cut into the lead to open the second half with a score and a free throw from Honor Duvall. UC then went on to score 10 of the next 12 points to extend its lead to 13. Turner added three straight scores for the Bearcats while also recording one steal.



The Blackbirds pulled within seven at the 9:47 mark after a Sophie Bhasin jumper, but free throws from both Turner and Lesha Dunn (Toronto, Canada/Trinity Valley Community College) pushed the lead back to double digits. The Bearcats edged the lead to as many as 15 (59-44) with 2:49 to play in the game.

The Blackbirds were led by Bhasin with 16 points. Guz finished with seven rebounds for LIU-Brooklyn.

Lovett led the team in rebounding for the third time this season and the second time during tournament action with seven boards. Turner finished with six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Chelsea Jamison (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple) and Hollins added six and five rebounds respectively.

The Bearcats return to action on Jan. 6 at Fifth Third Arena, opening BIG EAST play against Villanova. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
