CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati senior forward Jill Stephens (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) has been selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) to the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV women’s basketball team for the second consecutive season.
Stephens is the team’s second-leading scorer and rebounder this season, averaging 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest. She scored a career-high 30 points and added 10 rebounds against Providence on Feb. 3 and has two double-doubles this season. She is shooting 53 percent from the floor, 49 percent from three-point range, and 84 percent from the free throw line this season, all marks that would rank in the Top 10 in school single-season history.
Stephens is currently pursuing a PhD in audiology after earning her bachelor’s degree in communications sciences and disorders in three years, graduating in the spring of 2008 with a 3.98 grade point average. She holds a 3.8 GPA after her first quarter of doctoral work.
District IV, into which UC falls, consists of NCAA Division I universities in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. Stephens was named to the district’s first team, which makes her eligible for Academic All-American status. The 2008-09 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team will be released on Feb. 24.
The teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
