CINCINNATI – Head coach Jamelle Elliott and the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team announced the addition of Destini Feagin (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Regional) to its 2012 recruiting class.
“Destini is a great addition to round out our 2012 class,” Elliott said. “Destini is an extremely hard worker both in the classroom and on the court. I am looking forward to coaching and having Destini as part of our team next year.”
Feagin is a 5-10 shooting guard who spent the last three years at Nazareth Regional High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. She helped her team earn an 18-4 mark her senior year and won the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens regular-season title and the Catholic Class AA state crown for the second straight year.
The Philadelphia, Pa. native earned Philadelphia All-City honors as a sophomore and was named to the all-Catholic team her senior year.
Feagin joins a trio of early signees: Shelbi Chandler (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), Alexis Durley (Houston, Texas/Andy Dekaney) and Jasmine Whitfield (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham).
Coming off its most successful season in recent years, the Bearcats return leading scorer and all-BIG EAST Second Team member Dayeesha Hollins. The rising junior led UC with 14.8 ppg, while dishing out a team-high 105 assists in 30 starts in 2011-12.
Elliott, who recently signed a contract extension keeping her at the UC helm through the 2017-18 season, guided the Bearcats to a 16-16 record. It was a seven-game improvement from the previous season and the most wins since 2005-06 when the Bearcats went 17-12. The Bearcats finished with a .500 record for the first time since 2006-07 and recorded four conference road wins – its most since becoming a BIG EAST member. To cap the season, UC advanced to postseason play for the first time since 2005-06 and won its first postseason game in 10 years when it defeated Duquesne, 68-63, in overtime on March 16.
