Women's Basketball Partners with Public Library of Cincinnati

Sept. 26, 2013

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball program has partnered with The Public Library of Cincinnati to launch a new reading program Play, Eat Well & Read.

The goals of the program are to encourage youth to read for fun, study hard in school and live a healthy lifestyle by exercising and selecting healthy choices.

On Sept. 24, the UC women's basketball team visited four various library branches around the city including, Madeira, Montford Heights, Symmes Township and College Hill. Coaches and student athletes from the team gave a presentation to children first through sixth grades discussing the topics of the program - play, eat well and read.

Following the program, the athletes participated in fun activities including story reading, stretches, games, photos, and an autograph session.

Children grades first through sixth are encouraged to participate in this program by achieving three tasks:

Play: 30 minutes of exercise for five days
Eat well: healthy snack choices for five days
Read: read two books for fun on their own beyond the ones assigned by the teacher

Students participating in the program can have a teacher or a parent sign off on their completion with this form. Any student completing the program will receive four complimentary tickets to a women's home game. There are two easy methods to receive the tickets.

"We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to partner with The Public Library for this new program," stated head coach Jamelle Elliott. "We enjoyed visiting the four library branches Tuesday and met many wonderful children. We hope that youth will enjoy this program by exercising more, choosing healthy snacks and reading for fun. Our team is challenged daily to be the best they can as both a student and as an athlete, so we believe this new program is a great way to work with our community encouraging young children to do the same".
