CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball kicks off the 2008-09 season tonight (Oct. 17) with its first practice of the season at 5 p.m.
The Bearcats look to improve in J. Kelley Hall's second season at the helm of Cincinnati. UC returns eight letterwinners from last year's team that finished 12-16.
Notable returners include redshirt junior Kahla Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), who led last year's team with 16.5 points per game and knocked down 66 three-pointers. Her .398 percentage ranked as the sixth best individual mark in a season in Cincinnati history.
Senior Jill Stephens (Mineral Wells, West Virginia/Parkersburg South) led the team and finished third in the BIG EAST in rebounds last year, averaging 9.4 per game while averaging 13.0 points per contest. Stevens also tallied 10 double-doubles last season, leading the Bearcats.
Junior Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) returns after being granted a medical redshirt due to a knee injury. In 2006-07, Bellman averaged 10.4 points per game as well as grabbing 6.6 rebounds and dishing out 3.0 assists per contest.
Newcomers Katie Bushman (Phillips, Wis./Phillips), Shanasa Sanders (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault Senior), Val Schuster (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic), Elisa Shoate (Spiro, Okla./Arkansas-Fort Smith), and G.G. Williams (New Iberia, La./New Iberia) join the Bearcats this season. The class, Hall's first recruiting class at Cincinnati, was ranked 38th nationally by Blue Star Basketball.
The 2008-09 season starts on Nov. 1 against neighboring Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
