NEW YORK- The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team was picked to finish 12th in the BIG EAST Conference in a vote by the league's head coaches, which was unveiled at BIG EAST Women's Basketball Media Day on Thursday at the New York Athletic Club.

Cincinnati finished tied for 10th in the BIG EAST last season and posted a 16-16 mark, a seven-game improvement from the previous season and the most wins since 2005-06. Head coach Jamelle Elliottrecorded her first career postseason victory and the Bearcats won their first postseason game in 10 years with a victory against Duquesne in the first round of the WNIT. The 2012 season marked the first time UC had advanced to the postseason since 2005-06.

"This is the first time since I've been here that we've been picked higher than 15th in the preseason by the coaches," said Elliott.  "For us to be picked 12th this year is a tribute to how far we've come in my first three years at Cincinnati. We appreciate the fact that my peers feel like our program has improved as that shows in this ranking. We also know that these are just preseason rankings and we need to stay motivated and play hard this season and hopefully we will finished better than 12th."

Connecticut was tabbed as the league favorite, followed closely by 2012 national runner-up Notre Dame. Notre Dame All-American Skylar Diggins has been named the league's Preseason Player of the Year.

Coming off its most successful season in recent years, UC returns leading scorer and all-BIG EAST Second Team member Dayeesha Hollins. The junior led the Bearcats with 14.8 points per game while dishing out a team-high 105 assists in 30 starts in 2011-12. Also returning are junior starters Kayla Cook (6.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg), Jeanise Randolph (6.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg), and Tiffany Turner(6.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg).
