Women's Golf Sets School Record During Final Round of Old Waverly Invitational|
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s golf team shattered the school record for single-round team score by carding a 284 during the final round of the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational Tuesday.
The new school record shattered UC’s previous best of 294 by 10 strokes. That mark was set back on Sept. 21, 2008 at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate.
After averaging 308.5 during the first two rounds of the invitational, UC dropped more than 20 strokes off their team score Tuesday. The 284 represented the second-best score by any team during the three-day event, topped only by champion and host Mississippi State’s 275 on Tuesday.
The three-day team score of 901 is also the best such score since the Bearcats put up the same total during the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational in November of 2010.
Tuesday’s low score was aided by three different Bearcats shooting below par. Andrea Malek (Tibro, Sweden/Klippans Gymnasieskola) and Tara Liebert (Mason, Ohio/Mason) each finished at 2-under par while Stefanie Mitchell (Sarasota, Fla/Riverview) was 1-under par. Mackenzie Moir (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) was close behind with a 73 and Olivia Dose (Goteborg, Sweden/Goteborg Hogre Samskola) completed the scoring team with a 76. The group recorded 17 birdies during the final round after recording just 15 during the first two rounds combined.
Overall, Malek recorded UC’s best finish at the event, placing 17th with a 75-75-70=220. Dose finished 28th shooting 77-73-76=226 while Stefanie Mitchell recorded a 79-79-71=227. Tara Liebert (79-84-70=233) and Mackenzie Moir (81-82-73=236) completed Cincinnati’s scoring team.
Valentina Herrera (Bogata, Columbia) completed a strong showing as an individual competitor. Her score of 78-77-71=226 placed her 28th overall. She recorded the third-best score of any individual.
Mississippi State (281-288-275=844) ran away with the team title, bettering second-place East Carolina (289-290-286=865) by 21 strokes. Georgia Southern (293-298-285=876), Florida International (294-297-293=884) and Eastern Tennessee State (300-294-295=889) rounded out the top five. Cincinnati’s Tuesday score moved the Bearcats up one spot on the leaderboard to finish seventh.
The Bearcats will next compete at the Prices Give ‘Em Five Tournament hosted by New Mexico State October 7-9.
